Jaguars

Jaguars are the largest wild cats in the jungles of Belize. Diamond is a mother of two cubs, a boy, and a girl. Diamond tells Betsy that “the cubs have not found their names yet.” Diamond and her cubs stumble upon Betsy and her crew during their trek, and she is intrigued by Betsy’s ability to communicate with her. She agrees to help find Shawn if Betsy cares for the cubs.

The boy cub is happy to relax in the Jeep, but when Betsy finds herself in a bit of a jam, the girl cub is eager to help. She’s a pretty sharp cookie for such a young cat. Excerpt below.

The cub reluctantly ignored Lucas’s finger full of peanut butter and dug through the bag, eventually finding an end of the rope. She tried to tease it out of the bag. Lucas reached in and pulled the coil of rope onto the back seat. The cub jumped back to the ground and ran toward the woods, stopping to look at the rope and then Lucas before leaving the path. The humans looked at each other.

Gaga was the first to move. She grabbed the rope from the backseat and turned to follow the cub. “Come on, Lucas. I think Betsy’s in trouble.”

“Really? What gives you that idea?”

Gaga shrugged. “Years of Lassie reruns?”
